HYScale

The Horizon Europe project HYScale, coordinated by CENmat, scales a critical-raw-material-free advanced alkaline (AEM) water electrolysis technology to a 100 kW system.

HYScale develops and demonstrates a highly efficient, low-cost and sustainable anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis technology. It uses anion-exchange membranes, ionomers and catalysts without critical raw materials and without PFAS-based membranes or ionomers.

The project optimises and upscales the production of membranes, ionomers, electrodes, porous transport layers and stacks, and integrates a large-area stack into a functional electrolyser system that is validated in an industrially relevant environment at TRL 5.

targets

  • Stack with 400 cm² active area and 100 kW nominal power
  • 2 A/cm² at 1.85–2 V per cell
  • 60 °C operating temperature and 15 bar hydrogen output pressure
  • System CAPEX target of 400 €/kW (about 50 % cost reduction) and hydrogen below 3 €/kg
  • Industrial validation at TRL 5

Project targets as published on CORDIS; they are research goals, not product specifications.
