SWEETHY

SWEETHY develops direct seawater electrolysis based on an anion-exchange membrane, for distributed hydrogen production coupled to wind and solar power. CENmat is a project partner.

project facts

  • Full titleDirect seawater electrolysis technology for distributed hydrogen production
  • ProgrammeHorizon Europe – Clean Hydrogen Partnership (HORIZON-JU-RIA)
  • TopicDevelopment of innovative technologies for direct seawater electrolysis
  • Grant agreement101192342
  • Duration1 March 2025 – 28 February 2029
  • CoordinatorRISE Research Institutes of Sweden
  • CENmat’s rolePartner (beneficiary)

SWEETHY develops an AEM electrolyser that operates in natural or alkaline seawater and produces hydrogen and oxygen under intermittent renewable power.

Work covers corrosion-resistant, selective PGM-free catalysts, highly selective anion-exchange membranes with anti-fouling properties, anti-corrosion coatings, a stack architecture with hydraulic cell compression for high-pressure operation, and sustainability and techno-economic analysis.

targets

  • More than 2,000 h of operation on Mediterranean seawater in Messina, Italy
  • 20 g H₂/h production
  • Degradation below 1 %/100 h
  • Revenue optimisation with by-products and grid services

Project targets as published on CORDIS; they are research goals, not product specifications.
