NEWELY
NEWELY set out to redefine anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) with better membranes, electrodes and stack design. CENmat was one of the SME partners.
project facts
- Full titleNext generation alkaline membrane water electrolysers with improved components and materials
- ProgrammeHorizon 2020 – FCH JU (RIA)
- TopicNew anion exchange membrane electrolysers
- Grant agreement875118
- Duration1 January 2020 – 30 June 2023 (completed)
- CoordinatorGerman Aerospace Center (DLR)
- CENmat’s rolePartner (beneficiary)
NEWELY addressed the three main technical challenges of AEM water electrolysis – membrane, electrodes and stack – with SMEs supported by research centres in membrane science and low-temperature electrolysis.
The consortium developed a prototype 5-cell stack with elevated hydrogen output pressure, highly conductive and stable anionic membranes and efficient, durable low-cost electrodes, operating with pure water feed.
targets
- Prototype 5-cell AEM stack with elevated output pressure
- Twice the performance of the AEMWE state of the art at the time
- Pure-water feed operation
- 2,000 h endurance test
Project targets as published on CORDIS; they are research goals, not product specifications.
cenmat’s contribution
CENmat was one of the three SME partners, contributing on the electrode side of the AEM cell.
